“It should be seen whether you like it or not.” - The New Republic
Los Angeles, CA (January 2019) Noisy Nest presents an intimate and immersive theatrical experience surrounding the 1940’s existentialist drama “No Exit” by Jean-Paul Sartre. Three strangers are trapped in a room in hell awaiting their torture. They each struggle with the consequences from the lives they've left behind while attempting to create alliances and outsmart the hellish powers that be. This Hell may be escapable, but their true torture is not. No Exit tells the story of three damned souls who are brought to the same room in Hell and locked inside by a mysterious valet. They had all expected torture devices to punish them for eternity but instead have to deal with the consequences of their actions while alive.
Jean-Paul Sartre was a French philosopher, playwright, novelist, political activist, biographer, and literary critic. He was one of the key figures in the philosophy of existentialism and phenomenology, and one of the leading figures in 20th-century French philosophy and Marxism. Sartre wrote No Exit after being held as a POW by German forces in WWII as a way to make sense of his experience as a prisoner and the utter despair of the French people after the war.. Sartre believed that humans cannot simply watch and learn from others; they must undergo life events for themselves. Facing the reality of death was deemed a necessary occurrence. To feel “death consciousness,” enabled people to wake up to their authentic selves—life experience, not knowledge.
Noisy Nest’s founder and director Amanda Bird has a passion for risk taking in theater. She is taking on this immersive production with a strong vision bringing humanity to the surface of this hellish landscape. Bird has been directing and producing theater since 2005. Recent titles include Armitage by Don Nigro (Christina Moses, Ashley Bacon, Hope Lauren). Proof by David Auburn (Chaz Bono), Almost, Maine by John Cariani (Spencer Neville, Dah-uh Morrow) and Be A Good Little Widow by Bekah Brunstetter (Fayelyn Bilodeau). Holly Hubbell (Producer) has produced a myriad of theater and film projects including projects awarded at film festivals around the world including Cannes(2019) and Austin Music Video Festival (2018).
“We all know the existentialist writings of Jean-Paul Sartre, his work transcends time and remains relevant in every era. His play, No Exit, allows us to be ‘trapped’ in a room with his philosophy, faced with three people who fight to be the subject as they continue their life in death. We have created a unique immersive theater performance in which we take our audiences outside of the black box environment and place them in a room with fourteen other guests as they experience the play from another dimension. As artists it is our duty to push the boundaries in question, and I am proud to say that this will always be our mission at Noisy Nest.”
